Timothy Hill vs Maria Hill

Timothy Hill moved from Dallas Co. to Marengo co. the first of the year 1887 and worked on the Poole plantation near Linden . On the Riddle plantation lived a woman named Maria Holt. He became acquainted with her and believed her to be a respectable woman. He kept company with her only as a pleasant acquaintance.  About the first of July 1887 he was informed that aria was very sick and that she was pinning away for the love of him and would certainly die if he did not love her back and marry her without further delay.  He stated that he was a mere boy a little over 20 years old and admits that he was mightily pleased to have a handsome woman so much in love with him and dying to marry him. Of course he had to consent and not let her die.  Maria’s mother or one of her family got the license from the Probate Judge and on the 12th July 1887 Timothy Hill and Maria Holt were married. Orator shows that before the end of July “while the honeymoon was still shinning he discovered that he had been imposed upon and deceived”. Maria was not sick for love of him but as her family knew had been having Fits for years and instead of having someone to help him he found he was tied to a fitful wife. Worse was to come.   Orator learned that only the year before, Maria Holt had given birth to a bastard child and that midwife who waited upon her had the impudence to call on him to pay her bill. Orator was ‘outdone’ and July 30th he consulted a lawyer in order to see if he could not be released from his marriage into which he had been entrapped and fooled. He was advised to go home and make the very best he could and to keep out of court. He lived with Maria until about the 1st of Feb last year. She would not work, she quarreled and raised all sorts of rows and did everything to worry and trouble him. She boasted of her past life of shame and of her intimacy with other men and vowed she would keep it up.  Orator charged that his wife was guilty of adultery with Walter King . Orator has not lived with his wife since last Feb.
