History of the Whites

Go to descendants of Robert White.

Robert White was born about 1760 in NC. His parents were John and Kesiah White. Robert White was living in Marengo Co., AL by 1822 as indicated by a deed from his parents that were living in Wilcox Co., AL. The first wife of Robert White may have been Charlotte Sanders but is not proven.  He may have also married Jane Dixon.   There were at least five children that came with Robert to Alabama: Sarah; Henry C. White; Hiram; Lucy White; and Griffin White.

At the age of 68 Robert decided that he wanted to marry a young girl by the name of Sarah Dickson. Sarah was the daughter of Robert Dickson and Mary Giles. Sarah was only about eighteen years old at the time and due to the great difference in their ages her father was reluctant to let her marry Robert White. To persuade the father to let him marry her, Robert White promised to give Sarah a slave. This was sufficient to satisfy the father and Robert and Sarah were married on 28 Oct 1828. This displeased the older children of Robert White and they refused to attend the wedding. Robert and Sarah White had two sons, Thomas Dickson White, born 1830 and William Jasper White, born 1833. It was about this time that Sarah decided to leave Robert and move back home with the two boys. Robert White died in 1837. Henry C. White was the executor of his father's estate and through some devious trickery, he managed to prevent Sarah from recovering the slave that had been promised to her in the marriage contract. Sarah later married David Tindall.

Henry C. White was married first to Sarah Anderson in 1818 in Clarke Co., AL. They had four children: Sarah White, born ca 1820 and married Joseph Hare; Martha White, born ca 1823; Milberry White, born ca 1827 and married Jonathan Anderson; and Elizabeth White, born ca 1828. Henry C. White married second to Sarah Loftin on 25 March 1829. Sarah Loftin was the daughter of John Loftin and Sarah Giles. The children of Henry and Sarah (Loftin) White were: Henry A. J. White, born 1834 and married Mariah E. Pritchett; Pricilla White, born ca 1837; and Martha A. White, born ca 1839 and married to James R. Jackson. Henry C. White married third to Eveline L. Jackson in 1852. Their daughter, Victoria Isabella, born 1863 married James Pritchett in Marengo Co., AL in 1875. James Pritchett was the son of Robert Pritchett and Francis Ann Day. Henry C. White died in Jan 1864 and is probably buried in Friendship Cemetery near Vineland. There is no marker for him but there is one there for Eveline White.

Sarah White, daughter of Robert White, was born ca 1795 in NC and married William Cranford 10 April 1812 in Jasper Co., GA. William Cranford died in 1837 in Marengo Co., AL. After William's death, Sarah and her children moved to Ouachita Co., AR.

Lucy White, daughter of Robert White, was born ca 1805 in NC and married Henry Bryan Hare in 1823. Their children were Mary A. Hare, born 1824 and married Archibald A. Autry; Dennis Calhoun Hare, born ca 1830; Henry Bryan Hare, born ca 1833. After Lucy's husband died in 1843, Lucy married Presley Odom and they moved to Ouachita Co., AR.

Thomas Dickson White, son of Robert White and Sarah Dickson, married Ellizabeth S. Mitcham in 1848. Thomas was killed in the Civil War in TN.

William Jasper White married Armanda Heneley in 1855.
